Home Remedies For What Ails You

Toothache

Suggestions are clove oil on a cotton ball against the tooth or chewing a clove of garlic. That last one also keeps the Vampires away and sweethearts, but it claims within a few minutes it works. I have the back of a bottom tooth chipped off and three weeks yet until my dental appointment, so I may get to try that one. Ah, but I love garlic anyway, good excuse. Of course I like something with it…

It also says to use garlic on your wrist for a toothache. If the tooth is on the right side put the garlic on the left wrist. I do like home remedies and I would sure like to see this one tried. I will certainly have to paste this one to my fridge for someone to try and hopefully not me.

Some friends that work with my husband say without a doubt you can make a paste with aspirin and water to apply to a tooth that hurts and that the aspirin will eventually kill the nerves in that tooth making it never hurt again. That would be interesting to try, wouldn’t it?

Barefoot Lass’s says a woman recommends vanilla applied directly to the tooth with the alcohol being an antiseptic too, for infection. My husband has his own ideas on that one, but I will not include that here. (He is always the big joker.)

Sunburn

One home remedy is Noxema and I totally agree with that one because I have used it many times, but a cool shower first with the water not hitting you sharply will do wonders with a very mild soap only using your hands to apply, no rubbing, or even using Noxema as your soap is an even better idea, applying more after you only blot dry or slip on a terry robe to absorb the moisture. Never rub a burn!

There is one calling for vinegar and sour cream. I am speechless on that one, and that is probably for the best. There it is though if you choose to try it.

Sty

One suggestion is rub a gold ring over it. Well it doesn’t hurt to try I guess. I would certainly make sure it was very clean and antiseptic, if that doesn’t stand in the way of the gold’s power.

I felt sure I was getting a sty several months ago, although I had never had one and a friend told me that contact lens eye drops for soft lenses would fix me up, the store brand in fact. She said that they had used it for their family and she was certainly right about it working. It worked immediately and my cat who had suffered a few years with an allergy got her eyes healed with these drops! I got her a bottle of her own and she lets me put it in now without a fight! This is a sure one. I use a drop or two in each eye now once a week or so.

Upset Stomach

Ten drops of oil of peppermint to a glass of water is recommended or Altoids peppermint. I have found ginger to be good for digestion and stomach problems myself. For about three years I have been trying herbs and foods for different problems and ginger is one of my favorites and although I never really liked the flavor of ginger it can be tossed into salads raw, grated or chopped fine or added to stir fries, simmered in hot teas that have several different flavors and honey added and I find ginger to have helped my stomach from top to bottom. I highly recommend it. You don't even notice the taste this way and if I do taste it I will add more of something because too much will have the reverse affect.

Nausea

How about peppermint tums for nausea? I discovered that quite by accident. I was having nausea so often and one day instead of my fruit tums I tried a peppermint one and noticed my nausea disappearing almost immediately. I have switched over to peppermint and have had no nausea in almost a year! I don't even use tums every day.

Diarrhea

Buttermilk is recommended and carrot soup, especially for small children. Potato and carrot soup also is said to be good. This is a recipe you can use good for colds and flu for the whole family to help with that and diarrhea.

Cook one piece of chicken or use a quart of chicken broth (I prefer the real thing skinned and well rinsed)( if you do cook your own chicken remove it until all other is cooked and chop and add back at the end or just make chicken salad sandwiches with it adding mayo and pickle relish to eat with your soup) but make sure you have at least a quart of chicken broth.

1 quart chicken broth

Add 1 med onion chopped

2 diced potatoes

2 Lrg. stalks of celery-green tops too

3 chopped carrots

Cook about ½ hour or until carrots are tender

Add ½ stick butter and 1 can evaporated milk

salt, pepper. paprika opt

Season with salt, pepper and any herbs you like and be sure to not over heat once milk is added because it will scorch. We heat any leftovers in the microwave to prevent this. If you want more thickness you can use instant potatoes or if you are out of potatoes use instant potatoes after all else is done to your liking. I like to be able to drink mine and you can even blend it but that seems too much trouble so I use a potato masher sometimes, especially if I am serving it with grilled cheese or any type sandwich. Some like veggie chunks so all is optional, however you like it.

Very good hub. Any first aid for food poisoning?

I would advise forcing yourself to throw up if it hasn't been too long, charcoal tablets and vinegar are suppose to cleanse the stomach but I have no recipe...I will do something on that later, not that it helps now but purging the body of the poison any way you can I would advise and then peppermint tums are always great for nausea. I found that out accidentally having had nausea off and on for years, I never have it anymore.

Nothing like a good pot of soup in winter. My problem is I love warm loaf bread with it, buttered, so I don't have it real often. Thanks again for visiting, and God bless you, thank you.

Nice hub! Voted up, useful, interesting, and bookmarked so that I can come back to it. Will try them all. I love home remedies. My mother always gave me Vernors ginger ale for stomach aches (and for just about any ailment) when I was a kid. I can't get it here in Pennsylvania, so I stock up when I visit my family in Michigan. Thank you!

I've been sick all week with a cough. My husband and son got an antibiotic but I didn't go in to see a doctor. If I'm not better by Monday guess I will have to see the doctor. Got any ideas to stop a cough. Enjoyed reading your hub. Voted UP.

Hi Jackie... great hub and lots of good remedies. I have been thinking of doing one taking only what nature provides in the wilderness.

An old Cree Indian taught me something years ago for an upset stomach that I still use today. Take a juniper berry and place it under your tongue and as quick as you do the upset s gone.

A headache take Fireweed Flowers dry them and make tea and the headache is also gone.

Green moss on a infected wound and the poiso is drawn out.

Fresh moose dropping on a bee sting and the poison is drawn out... just thought I would toss that one in for good measure... lol

Hugs for the great Hub

moonlake-Horehound is said to be a great expectorant that gets the mucus buildup in your chest that may be causing the cough. Make horehound tea, drink two or three times daily, thinning phlegm and makes you recover more quickly. Combine 1/4 cup of dried horehound with 1 quart of water in pot. Simmer a few minutes then strain it. Add ¼ cup of honey and the juice from a lemon. Drink whole cups at a time and keep leftovers cool to warm as needed. Check back, if I get time I will do a hub, I know onions are good too. Sugar-free menthol drops for temporary I use. Hope something helps!

Lavender Oil or Tea Tree oil as antiseptic. Lavender oil and baking soda makes a great carpet cleaner

Yes and I am glad you reminded me of the baking soda, that is great for people with allergies to clean carpets to keep down the sneezes and breathing problems. Thank you!

Wow, the diarrhea remedy is really interesting. I had tooth ache last week and neither vanilla nor garlic touched it, but the effects from clove oil was almost instantaneously. Thanks for all these tips!

Clove oil, well I will certainly have to remember that. Actually the last is my potato soup recipe since it has about all the ingredients called for to fight diarrhea. Thanks for reading.
